Advocating at School – ONE BIG HAPPY HOME

Advocating at School

So how do we equip our kids with the skills they need to be successful? How do we communicate with the school so they understand our kids’ unique needs, without oversharing information?

We’ve gathered a few of our favorite resources that will help you start the year off right!

When sharing resources with your child’s teacher or school remember a few things:

  1. Don’t overwhelm them with too much information or too many resources. Pick one or two things to focus on that will help your child.
  2. If possible, provide tangible resources for your child’s classroom to help the whole classroom. (Check out the podcast episode below for some ideas.)

Resources to share with teachers:

  1. Trauma-informed classroom article
  2. The Connected Child – Chapter 4 (free download)

When helping your child build skills remember a few things:

  1. The issues are often more complicated than we think. What looks like defiance might be fear. Help your child feel safe.
  2. What looks like aggression could be sensory. Be a detective. Look at what is below the behavior and address the need.

Resources for you:

  1. Advocating at School podcast
  2. The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun
  3. A simple sensory path you can create at home

Is your child’s school looking for help to better understand trauma? We have a training that can be customized to the needs of the school. Check out our trauma-informed training for schools.
